This forum topic is opened for discussion of the diabetes research project of Prof. Dr. Samir Assaad.

This research initiative is called:
"Health Screening Project for the early detection of diabetes and atherosclerosis"

This is a huge scale research (and community service) project registered at the Alexandria Faculty of Medicine and his main researcher is Prof. Dr. Samir Hilmi Asaad, Professor of Internal Medicine.

Tasks will include:
1) Taking a patient history and filling a questionnaire
2) Measuring blood pressure
3) Measuring blood glucose level
4) Measuring BMI

Volunteers will gain:
1) A short introductory training course with Prof. Dr. Samir Asaad on your tasks in the research project.
2) Full cooperation from the Faculty, including facilitations for days off (more information on that later when we hear from Prof. Dr. Ahmed Osman)
3) Volunteer work/community service is an extra asset for you as a person and in your CV

4) A certificate confirming that they have undergone this volunteer work and taken part in this research project.

Volunteers will be expected to:
1) full commitment
2) consistency and attendance till the tasks are finished

This is in fact a very good question!

The co-researcher is mentioned in the research paper that he is a 'co-researcher'. For undergraduate students co-researchers in our Faculty, the protocol says that there must be at least 2 student co-researchers.

However, since this is a huge research project (I heard they are trying to study 20,000 patients) they need like 50 student volunteers. These volunteers, as I believe, can not be co-researchers, however they volunteered for helping with the project.

Volunteers or people who helped with the research work but are not mentioned as coauthors or co-researchers are usually mentioned in the "Acknowledgements" section in the final published research paper. So their names get published within the paper in the end.

However, I am not 100% sure if this will be the case with this project. You can try asking if your names will be published in the "Acknowledgements" section of the final published manuscript during tomorrow's meeting or wait until I can personally meet Dr. Samir and ask him myself.

I have met with Prof. Dr. Samir Assaad, who answered some questions:
1) Regarding the relation of this project to the one held by Suzanne Mubarak Centre: it is a parallel project to the one held by Suzanne Mubarak Center, but a separate one.

2) Dr. Samir stressed the fact that students who will volunteer will not be disrupted from their examinations and that work will be maximum one time per month, and on a Thursday!

I have met today with Prof. Dr. Samir and asked him about this project. He told me that there is no rush. He wants to wait until he can meet with Dr. Ahmed Osman to discuss this project first. After that he can meet interested students or update us with the latest.

I apologize for the "alleged" meetings!
But the people who told me that they were organizing these meetings (related in one way or another perhaps to the Faculty of Pharmacy, and to another association, I don't remember the exact name) were reckless.

I think Sara Tarek attended the "alleged" second one ... will you update us Sara?

Anyway .. as for now, there is no need to rush. And from now on we will contact Prof. Dr. Samir directly when it comes to this project, The man is more than cooperative. We don't have to get into contact through these people anymore for the time being.

alexresearch is an independent association that is run by volunteering students in their freetime as an extracurricular activity. We are not associated in any way with the students' union. I hope I made this point clear.

It seems that mohamed_abdel_nabi used this forum as a vehicle for advertising the students union, which made you confused.

I had no rule for such post(s) on the forum; I also find that deleting the post right now will be undue censorship since it is not inappropriate so I will leave it be for the time being.
